ROCK AND ROLL BUTCH

(George Douglas Lee)

I wrote this song with bassist Joe Alford in 1979. It was inspired by my memories of an unbelievable character I remembered from high school. He was a Latino, who came to the weekly Kirwin dances, dressed to kill in his Hawaiian shirt, khaki pants and patent leather shoes, with his hair slicked back and combed perfectly with butch wax. He would dance by himself on nearly every song. Every now and then, I hear somebody mention him, so I thought it was time to let you all hear the song I wrote about him.

Rock and Roll butch

Lyrics & Music by George Douglas Lee

INTRO IN A

A To some people rock and roll is D just a E lot of noise E

A But to a guy I know, B it's his life and it's his E name

D He ain't a critic, he likes it E all, A he's got an AM-FM D brain

A He's a real rockin' robin, E, D man look at him fly A – F, E

We call him A Rock and Roll G Butch, D Rock and Roll Butch A

A Rock and Roll Butch, the G Saturday D Night A Kid F, E

Butch is still in high school, tryin' to get out of the eleventh grade

When it comes to having fun, he's number one, I guess he's got it made

He's got a constant beat in his electric feet

He's wearin' day-glo tennis shoes

he's a real rockin' robin, man look at him cruise

We call him Rock and Roll Butch, Rock and Roll Butch

Rock and Roll Butch, the Saturday Night Kid

A There's a big dance in the gym tonight, D everybody knows that E Butch will be there

A In his khaki pants, his B Hawaiian shirt and his E patent leather hair

A He'll be going alone as usual, he's a D solo kind of B guy

D Ain't nothing gonna happen E tonight, until D rock and roll E Butch A arrives

SOLO G C, D

INTRO ON A – THEN DRUM BREAK

We call him A Rock and Roll G Butch, D Rock and Roll Butch A

A Rock and Roll Butch, the G Saturday D Night A Kid F, E
