Simple. Autobiographical. I wrote it while working at the Target store in Galveston, Texas, during the lowest point of my life. It's about my fall from grace and dealing with being a minimum wage robot in the big box department store and how it changes one's life. I did try to relate the funny side of being a subterranean far from the one percent.

Riff pattern in E, basically E – A

Now I’m minimum wage in a retail store

Working too hard just to stay behind

B I’m on the downhill side of fifty A and I’m runnin’ out of time…

E I got the middle-class, E7 workin’ man, A mid-life, G has-been blues

Middle Class Workin’ Man Mid Life Has Been

E I got the middle-class, E7 workin’ man, A mid-life, G has-been blues

Middle Class Workin’ Man Mid Life Has Been

G Hey, hey, hey – A don’t know what freedom costs?

G Won’t let anybody take away – B my day off

E I got the middle-class, A workin’ man, G mid-life has-been blues

Never even thought about the things I have to live without

Took so much for granted - while I lived it up and played

Never took the time to love, what could I have been thinkin’ of?

I should have known about the rate of exchange

I got the middle-class, workin’ man, mid-life, has-been blues

Middle Class Workin’ Man Mid Life Has Been

I got the middle-class, workin’ man, mid-life, has-been blues

Middle Class Workin’ Man Mid Life Has Been

Hey, hey, hey – don’t know what freedom costs?

Won’t let anybody take away – my day off

I got the middle-class, workin’ man, mid-life has-been blues

BREAK Follow progression here

I’m sweatin’ like a prisoner on a chain gang, breaking rocks

But I’m hanging lingerie, and baby, I’m sorting socks

I’m a worker ant in a funny shirt, sayin”

“May I help you find something?” smiling, and eating dirt.

E, E, E, E

B, A, B, A, A, F#m, E

Now I can barely make the rent

Live for that paycheck, but it’s already  spent

Can’t keep a woman, when you don’t have the money

I’m too damn tired to get it on - but I sure do miss that honey

I got the middle-class, workin’ man, mid-life, has-been blues

Middle Class Workin’ Man Mid Life Has Been

I got the middle-class, workin’ man, mid-life, has-been blues

Middle Class Workin’ Man Mid Life Has Been

Hey, hey, hey – don’t know what freedom costs?
